Province of Nuoro: General Overview
Hello everyone! Today I would like to talk to you about the province of Nuoro, one of the Italian provinces in Sardinia. It covers an area of 5,638 km², with a population of about 199,349 inhabitants. The province was established in 1927 and overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea to the east, bordering the province of Sassari to the north, the province of Oristano to the west, and the province of South Sardinia to the south. But let's discover together a bit of the history of this fascinating province!
History
The history of the province of Nuoro is mainly linked to that of its capital. In fact, since the eighteenth century, Nuoro played an increasingly central role even from an administrative, cultural, and political point of view on the surrounding territories. In 1779, Pope Pius VI even chose Nuoro as the episcopal see of the reconstituted diocese of Galtellì.
Subsequently, Nuoro became the seat of the Prefecture Tribunal in 1807 and, from 1821 to 1848, it was the capital of the province. However, in 1848, it was suppressed and transformed into an administrative and intendency division. This organization was in turn abolished in 1859 with the Rattazzi decree, and Nuoro became a simple sub-prefecture, falling under the province of Sassari.
Only during the fascist period, in 1927, Nuoro was again elevated to a province and had seven historical regions, such as Barbagia, Baronie, Ogliastra, Marghine, Planargia, Sarcidano, and Montiferru. The first president of the province during the fascist regime was the Prefect Ottavio Dinale, who soon worked for the construction of the most important public infrastructures in the city and in the province.
During World War II, the province of Nuoro suffered many bombings, but the capital was never hit thanks to the Nuoro air raid shelters.
In the early 1970s, the province of Nuoro saw massive industrialization works with the construction of the Ottana petrochemical plant and the Arbatax paper mill. Until the early 2000s, these facilities employed numerous workers.
Abolition or Reform of Provinces in Sardinia
I would like to point out that, following the referendums in Sardinia in 2012, the Region approved a project to abolish or reform the provinces in Sardinia on May 24, 2012. According to the intentions of the Region, the Province of Nuoro would have had to give rise to a new administrative entity or be abolished on March 1, 2013. However, this deadline was then extended to July 1, 2013.
Conclusions
I hope that this brief summary of the history of the province of Nuoro has been useful and interesting to you. Personally, Sardinia fascinates me a lot, and this province in particular has a very interesting and troubled history. If you are ever in the area, I recommend you to visit Nuoro and the surrounding province to discover more about this beautiful land. See you next time!
