History

The municipality of Terzigno has existed since 1913, when it separated from the municipality of Ottaviano. However, its history and that of Ottaviano are closely linked, at least until the 20th century. Terzigno also has a Roman past, and the aristocrats of Pompeii admired the splendid view of Mount Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples.

Furthermore, Terzigno contributed to the history of Italian unification: in 1861, the Captain of the National Guard, Don Giuseppe Boccia, was killed in the area by some brigands during the liberal uprisings. In 2013, the municipality celebrated its first centenary.

Symbols

The coat of arms of the municipality of Terzigno represents Mount Vesuvius, and its motto, "Ter Ignis", refers to the three times the town was destroyed by volcanic eruptions. The banner is blue.

Monuments and places of interest

The municipality of Terzigno boasts several tourist attractions, such as the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Menichini Palace, an eighteenth-century Vesuvian villa called Villa Bifulco, and the Roman villas of Cava Ranieri. In addition, there are also two museums, the Archaeological Museum of Terzigno and the Emblem Museum.

Natural areas

Terzigno is part of the Vesuvius National Park, with an area of 1700 hectares of territory. The Bosco del Vesuvio and the Mediterranean pine forest are just part of the natural areas that the municipality has to offer.

Society

Terzigno has a population of just over 17,000 inhabitants and there are about 1553 foreign citizens residing in the area.

Culture

The municipality of Terzigno is proud of its state-run public schools, which cater to all educational needs: there is a educational circle, a state comprehensive institute and the Scientific, Human and Linguistic High School I.S.I.S. Striano-Terzigno, branch office of the Striano hotel management school.

Economy

Terzigno is famous for its wine production, thanks to its fertile volcanic soil that produces the renowned "Lacryma Christi" wine. Local cuisine also offers some specialties, such as fried pizza, pasta with salted ricotta, caponata, Vesuvius sausage, and limoncello.

In summary, Terzigno is an Italian municipality that offers many opportunities for history, nature, and good food lovers. With its proximity to Mount Vesuvius and the sea, Terzigno is an ideal destination for a holiday in Campania.
