Welcome to Terrazzo, the municipality of Verona

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Terrazzo, a municipality in the province of Verona in Veneto, Italy. Terrazzo has 2127 inhabitants and is located in the southeastern part of the province, on the border with the province of Padua. How about discovering more about the geography, etymology, history, and coat of arms of this enchanting municipality?

Physical geography

Terrazzo is a municipality delimited by the Adige River in the southern part. Along the river, there are the two hamlets of Begosso and Nichesola, where you can admire the wonderful landscape. The center of the town is crossed by another smaller watercourse, the Terrazzo, which divides the urban center in two. Since 2008, the Adige River has been crossed by a bridge that connects Terrazzo to the right bank, reducing the distance with the two contiguous municipalities of Villa Bartolomea and Castagnaro.

Etymology

The etymology of the toponym Terrazzo is not yet fully clear, but the most accredited hypothesis associates the name of the municipality with the term deriving from the ancient Venetian language of "torazo", meaning tower, bastion. In fact, the town is mentioned in an ecclesiastical document from 1145 as ''Turracii". The tower would correspond to a fortification built around the twelfth century, present in a historic villa in the town.

Coat of arms

The symbol representing the municipality of Terrazzo, as tradition has it, sees the tower depicted with Merlo, gilding, and black masonry, included in an escutcheon with a red background. The coat of arms is enriched by the municipality crown in the upper part and by two branches, one of Laurus nobilis, the other of quercus in the lower part.

History

Prehistory

In this area, there was a numerous and stable population organized in settlements in the last period of the Bronze Age, around 1400-1200 BC. The most important findings were made in via Brazzetto during the construction of elementary schools (in the nineties). The absence of the watercourse was characteristic in this area. Indeed, the Adige River modified its course from the Cucca route to the High Middle Ages and began flowing to Terrazzo, causing a different ecosystem.

History

In Roman times, the area was not traversed except by minor roads, which, however, communicated with the Postumia and Annia roads. With the Cucca route (October 17, 589), the area corresponding to the current Bassa Veronese was modified in a very negative way; the environment went from an area of fertile and flood-safe lands to a situation of precarious balances. During the time of stabilizing the new course of the Adige River, the territory was subjected to abandonment due to the creation of a large and unstable swamp until the tenth century.
