Terrassa Padovana

Terrassa Padovana: history and meaning of the name

Hello everyone! Today I feel like taking a trip not only through time but also into the culture of my beloved Veneto, and presenting to you the Municipality of Terrassa Padovana. But let's start with the origins of its name.

''Terasa'' in Venetian language and ''Terrassa'' in Italian, seem to derive from Terra Arsa, a wooded territory, surrounded by marshes, deforested with rapid and violent action by fire. The first certain document dating the origin of the toponym of this locality dates back to November 3, 1097, where a donation by Cono da Calaone to the monastery of San Michele in Candiana is mentioned.

Arzercavalli, a village of Terrassa Padovana, is mentioned in the first document of October 25, 1165 on the occasion of property transfers, under the name of "Arzer De Cavallis". The locality was known for the presence of a navigable canal with the possibility of towing boats with horses on the embankments, placing it among the commercial centers of the area.

Monuments and places of interest: churches of Terrassa Padovana

The small Municipality of Terrassa Padovana is not only rich in history and traditions, but also in monuments and places of importance. Among the religious architectures, the first church I will talk to you about is that of San Tommaso Apostolo. The current building, in Baroque style, was built on the pre-existing church of the second half of the 13th century.

Another noteworthy church is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy. Located on the northern outskirts of the Municipality, the sanctuary preserves architectural elements of the original Romanesque parish church to which new stylistic elements have been added over the centuries.
