Hello everyone! Are you ready to explore the beautiful city of Terralba? This municipality of just over 9,000 inhabitants is located in the province of Oristano, in Sardinia, in the Campidano region. Today I will take you on a journey to discover the physical geography, geology and hydrography, and reclamation of this wonderful area.

Physical geography

Terralba: exploring the history of a unique Sardinian city.

Territory

The territory of Terralba is located in the plain of northern Campidano, near the areas of Monte Arci and Marmilla. Over 10,000 people live here between the city center and the two hamlets, Tanca Marchese and Marceddì. The territory extends over an area of 34.87 km², part of which was reclaimed starting in 1918. The Rio Mogoro river, one of the few in the area, crosses the territory.

Terralba is an important crossroads of the state roads in the area. Its position on the SS126 Southwestern Sardinian which connects Marrubiu to Sant'Antioco makes it easily accessible from neighboring centers in the provinces of Medio Campidano and Carbonia-Iglesias. The town hall is located just 9 meters above sea level and the highest point in the territory reaches 30 meters above sea level. The entire city center of Terralba is classified as having a very low seismic risk and a very high flood risk.

Geology and Hydrography

The area of Terralba has been influenced by the presence of Monte Arci, a very active volcano in the Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene eras. Lava rocks and traces of ancient thermal settlements, such as those in the Oristano plateau, are still evident. In addition, the Terralba area is particularly known for the presence of Obsidian, a black shiny rock of lava origin.

Most of Terralba's territory is made up of alluvial deposits which come from the rivers of the area such as the Rio Mogoro, the Rio Sitzerri and the Flumini Mannu. These rivers flow into the lagoon of Marceddì, which is located on the territory administered by neighboring municipalities.

Reclamation

One of the events that changed the history of Terralba was the great hydraulic reclamation. The reclamation took place in two periods: the first between 1895 and 1918 during the construction of the work and the second between 1919 and 1928 during its realization. This project completely transformed the landscape of the Terralba plain and changed the lives of its inhabitants.
