Borgo Hermada
Borgo Hermada: History and Territory
Borgo Hermada is one of the New Rural Villages that arose in the Agro Pontino during the Fascist period. The 6 km² town is located in a wide rural area of the municipality of Terracina. The area was freed from swamps and the Planiziale Forest and divided into lots for cultivation. Borgo Hermada, along with other similar centers, was established as a service center for the land reclamation work made possible by the reclamation of the Agro Pontino.
The village was built by the O.N.C. in 1932, in the Macchia di Piano area. In 1933, the government commissioner for the Reclamation of the Agro Pontino decided that the villages should be named after famous battles of World War I. Thus Borgo Hermada took its name from Mount Ermada, now on the Slovenian border. The Hermada Agricultural Company was one of the companies created by the O.N.C. to manage the thousands of farms created in the surrounding area.
The village stands out from others for the anti-decorative architectural style of the main buildings. The architects Gino Cancellotti, Luigi Piccinato, Alfredo Scalpelli, and Eugenio Montuori, who together designed the church, were the same architects as Sabaudia. The engineer Alfredo Pappalardo, of the O.N.C.'s Technical Office, designed the school, the reservoir, the company center, the typical schemes for farmhouses, and Piccinato designed the Post Office and the Fascist House. The church of Sant'Antonio is particularly interesting because it takes inspiration from medieval Abruzzese architecture.
Festivals and Events
Every June 13, Borgo Hermada celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua with the Solemn Procession accompanied by the "Città di Terracina" Band. Since 1973, Borgo Hermada has hosted the Pedagnalonga, the traditional spring walk through the farmland. At the same time, two running races are also held: the half marathon of 21 km and the "maratonina" of 10 km. The event is part of the 'Earth Day Italy' program. The traditional Beer Festival is held in July and August.
