Collestatte

Collestatte: A brief introduction

Hello friends! Today I will talk to you about Collestatte, a beautiful hamlet of the municipality of Terni, located in the province of Terni. This hamlet is composed of an ancient part, located on the top of a hill, and a newer part, called Collestatte Piano. According to the 2001 census, the population amounts to 397 inhabitants.

History

The history of Collestatte dates back to 1090, when it was first mentioned as a possession of the Duchy of Spoleto with the name "Colle Stacti". This was originally placed to defend the lower Valnerina and near a spring. In 1898, a factory for the production of calcium carbide was opened here. Over the centuries, Collestatte has been owned by Orsini and Manassei. In 1927, it was merged with the current municipality of Terni.

Monuments and places of interest

The urban structure of Collestatte is characterized by streets that converge in the central San Pietro square, where the ancient watchtower stands, today the bell tower of the Trinity Church. Inside, the church houses a 16th century altarpiece and a statue of San Sebastiano attributable to the workshop of Niccolò Alunno, a 15th century basin and a baptismal font dated 1543 with the coat of arms of the Orsini. Among the other 18th century residences, there are the Orsini palace, leaning against the church, and the Vitali and Manassei palaces, facing it.

Infrastructure and Transportation

Collestatte is crossed by the SS 209 Valnerina and in the years between 1901 and 1960, it was served by the Terni-Ferentillo tramway. The latter was created to facilitate the transport of people and goods along the Nera valley, an infrastructure that was born precisely when the area was in full industrialization.

An extremely important factory for the production of calcium carbide and derivatives was located in Collestatte, and the ownership built the tramway that originated in the area. The tramway had a junction that served the factory.

Sports

Sports Associations

As for sports, in Collestatte there is the Collestatte Cascata, a sports association that was born in 1988 following the merger of the football sectors of the Cascata Sports Group and the Collestatte Sports Club, founded respectively in Collestatte Piano in 1970 and in Collestatte Paese at the end of the 1970s. Until 1998, it participated in the Umbrian amateur football championships, promoting a flourishing youth sector. Subsequently, from 1999 to 2009, it played in the amateur 5-a-side football championships. Currently, the Collestatte Cascata plays in the amateur 7-a-side football championships organized by the Uisp of Terni since 2010.
