Cesi
Welcome to Cesi: discovering the history and location of the town
Hello everyone, today I will talk about Cesi, a lovely hamlet in the municipality of Terni, in the Umbria region. It is located at an altitude of 437 meters on the slopes of Mount Eolo, about 10 km from Terni, in the northern outskirts towards Carsulae. Thanks to its position, leaning against the mountain, Cesi offers a splendid panorama of the entire Terni basin. 682 residents live in the village, according to Istat data from 2001.
Cesi has a millennial history: its origins date back to the Umbrian era, as evidenced by the remains of polygonal and Italic walls dating back to the 6th century BC. In the Middle Ages, the town was a fiefdom of the Arnolfi and capital of the Arnolfe Lands, owned by them. The village's name derives from the Latin caesa, which means deforested place.
Economy, events, infrastructure and transportation
There is an astronomical observatory on the plateau of S. Erasmo, while public mobility is managed by Busitalia Umbria with several urban and extraurban Terni passing lines. Although Cesi is a small village, several cultural and artistic events are organized, especially during the Cesi Musical September.
Monuments and places of interest
Cesi is a real treasure trove of architectural and historical treasures. Among the most interesting monuments, we can mention the paleochristian church of S. Michele Arcangelo, in Romanesque Art style, also used for conferences and concerts, the Contelori Palace, former seat of the old Municipality of Cesi, the church of S. Andrea with funeral steles from Carsulae on the façade, the parish church of S. Maria Assunta, with an altar painting by the Master of Cesi, the Cittadini-Cesi Palace from the 16th century, the medieval city walls that rise up to 790 m of the Sant'Erasmo plateau, accompanied by a system of watchtowers, the Umbrian Arce (5th-6th century BC) with polygonal walls, the church of S. Erasmo founded by the Benedictines and built in Romanesque style, the Stocchi Palace, from which one can enter the so-called Eolian cave, the Eustachi Palace, and the Church of Sant'Onofrio, unfortunately in strong degradation.
Sports
Sports enthusiasts in Cesi have plenty of choices. The main football team is A.S.D. Cesi F.C., which plays in the Second Category Girone E, but it is also possible to practice mountain biking, hiking, speleology, and sport climbing.
Conclusions
In conclusion, Cesi is a small treasure trove of hidden gems, an ideal place for those looking for tranquility, art, history, and natural beauty. If you are in the vicinity of Terni, I recommend spending a few hours visiting this charming Umbrian village.
