Welcome to Ternengo: a small but welcoming community

Ternengo is a small municipality in the Piedmont region located in the province of Biella, with a population of around 259 people. The town extends over an area of about 2 km from east to west and less than 1.5 km from north to south. The town is situated on a hill in central Biellese, with an altitude ranging from around 560 meters to just over 300 meters near the border with Piatto (Italy). Physical Geography

The municipality of Ternengo is located southeast of Bric Moncucco, near the hamlets of Canei, Serracuta, and Villa. A bit further southeast is Valsera. The town is crossed by the Quargnasca river and covers an area that is entirely included in the river basin.

Origin of the Name

The name Ternengo has a Lombard origin, as indicated by the "-engo" suffix. However, there are also medieval documents that mention the town as "Ternengus".

History

Symbols

The symbol of Ternengo is the Avogadro Castle on the top of the shield. The town also adopted the red and gold bands from the coat of arms of the Avogadro family of the Valdengo branch, who were feudal lords of the place along with the Lords of Buronzo.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Ternengo has many places of interest, including the Castle of the Avogadros, built in the 13th century and refurbished at the end of the 19th century. The parish church of Sant'Eusebio is another landmark of the town and was rebuilt in the 17th century.

Demographic Evolution

The demographic evolution of Ternengo has had its ups and downs. In 1861, the town had a population of 402, but this decreased during the two World Wars. After World War II, the population started to rise again until reaching the 259 residents of today.

Administration

Ternengo is part of the Valle Cervo Mountain Community, which was created in 1973. Over the years, the mountain community merged with other Piedmontese mountain communities and was eventually suppressed.
