Termoli

Welcome to Termoli

Hello everyone! Today we'll talk about Termoli, a beautiful Italian city in the Molise region. Termoli has a population of 32,248 people and is the second largest city in the region after Campobasso. This city has everything: from the sea to the mountains, passing through a delightful medieval village and an important port. Let's discover the details together!

Termoli: history, sea, and gastronomy in Molise.

Physical geography

Territory

Termoli overlooks the Adriatic Sea and is located at an altitude ranging from 0 to 178 meters above sea level. The city develops in a hilly area and is located in a low seismic risk zone. The city is located between the Biferno River to the south and the Sinarca stream to the north. These watercourses gave the city its ancient name of ''Interamna Frentanorum'', which means "land between two rivers".

The oldest part of the city, the Borgo Antico, is located on a promontory and offers a view of the Adriatic Sea. The city extends towards the north coast (Sant'Antonio Beach) and towards the south (Rio Vivo), where there are many equipped beaches. The city center consists of three main streets (Corso Nazionale, Corso Fratelli Brigida, Corso Vittorio Emanuele III) that were the fulcrum of the city's development in the early 1800s.

Termoli also has many suburbs that develop on the hills around the city. In these areas, mainly olive groves are found, from which the city was named a member of the National Association of Oil Cities. To the south of the city lies the Pantano Basso plain, the only coastal plain in the Molise region. Here is also the industrial area of the city, which offers a view of the entire hinterland of Termoli. Termoli is also the only port on the Molise coast, which offers, in addition to fishing activities, connections to the Tremiti Islands.

It is interesting to note that Termoli is the intersection between the 42nd parallel North and the 15th meridian East. This meridian is the central meridian of the time zone of Berlin, Paris, and Rome (Central European Time) and determines the solar time of the time zone itself (in fact called ''Termoli time''). The intersection between the two lines is reached on the Rio Vivo beach, right next to where a disused trabucco was located.

The historic center of Termoli

The historic center of Termoli is a magical place, perfect for a romantic walk or to enjoy an evening in good company. Here you can admire the old walls that surround the medieval village, the old stone houses, and the narrow streets that wind between them. The main entrance to the village is located on the ruins of the medieval castle walls and leads to the main square, where the cathedral of San Basso is located.

Here you can breathe in the true atmosphere of Termoli, a place that seems to have stopped in time. We were impressed by the beauty of the medieval village, the romantic alleys, and the incredible view of the Adriatic Sea.

What to do in Termoli

Termoli offers many tourist activities: from visiting the medieval village to the trip to the Tremiti Islands, from a beach holiday to wine and food tours among the wineries in the area. The city also offers a wide variety of restaurants where you can taste typical Molise cuisine: from fish soups to meat-based dishes.

Among the main attractions of the city, there are certainly the beaches of Rio Vivo and Sant'Antonio, where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas, and practice water sports. In the area, there are also some of the best nightclubs in Molise, which liven up the summer evenings of the city.

The city also hosts several events throughout the year, including the Feast of San Basso in May and the Festival of Ancient Flavors in September. This festival is famous throughout Molise for its typical products, like stuffed peppers, caciocavallo cheese, and fried pizza.

Conclusions

If you love tranquility, the sea, and history, then Termoli is the perfect city for you! A magical city where you can stroll through the streets of the medieval village, taste delicious dishes, and swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic. A perfect place for a family vacation, with friends, or with your partner. You won't regret it!
