Hello everyone! Today I will take you on a journey to discover a beautiful city in Sicily: Termini Imerese, or as its inhabitants call it, Tèrmini. Located in the metropolitan city of Palermo, it is an important railway and maritime hub thanks to the presence of a well-connected railway station and a large commercial port.

Let's discover the physical geography of Termini Imerese

Termini Imerese stands on a territory that goes from the sea to the mountains, making it a city of unique beauty. Its territory has been declared the Monte San Calogero Nature Reserve, an area made up of the San Calogero mountain system that rises between the coast of the Gulf of Termini Imerese and the fertile and flat surrounding territory. Among the most interesting places in the city, there are the ruins of Himera and the associated antiquarium, numerous and interesting churches, and prehistoric artifacts.

The history of Termini Imerese

Termini Imerese dates back to prehistoric times, when humans lived in caves and rock shelters. After the destruction of Imera (a Greek colony) by the Carthaginians in 409 BC, the settlement was rebuilt two years later (407 BC) 12 km west of the previous one, where Termini Imerese stands today. The name it then assumed ''Thermai Himeraìai'' (in Latin ''Thermae Himerae'') is due to the existence of hot springs nearby, still used today: the modern Terme, in the lower city, occupy the same place as the Roman ones, of which they still preserve some remains. The coins of Termini, which have the head of Hercules on the obverse and three Nymphs on the reverse, are inspired by the myth of the legend of the Terme.

According to Cicero, the city was founded by the survivors of Imera, while Diodorus Siculus claims that Termini Imerese was founded by the Carthaginians, with the contribution of Libyan colonists.
