Terlizzi

Terlizzi: a city immersed in nature

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about Terlizzi, a beautiful city located in the metropolitan city of Bari, in Puglia. Terlizzi is a municipality of 26,098 inhabitants, known for its flourishing floriculture industry and its privileged position in the low Murgia, on a relief of the first Murgian step. The city is surrounded by a lush wooded area, which offers splendid naturalistic views.

A place rich in history and culture

The roots of Terlizzi date back to the 6th century AD, although the first historical evidence is documented only in the Donation of Wacco, of the 8th century. At that time, the city was surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and oak forests, from which the toponyms of Sovereto, a fraction of Terlizzi, derive, which owes its name to the Latin "Suberito", which recalls the cork trees.

After the Byzantine domination, Terlizzi became part of the Giovinazzo area of influence under the Norman rule of Count Amico of Giovinazzo. Under his government, Terlizzi was fortified, and imposing towers and the Norman castle were built, of which only the Torre Maggiore remains today. In 1123, the city acquired the title of "city", recognized by the stele affixed to the Torre Maggiore of the Castle.

Today, the city has a very rich cultural heritage, which can be admired in its historic center. Among the main buildings, you can see the Chiesa Madre, the Palazzo Marchesale, the Chiesa di Sant'Oronzo and the Teatro Comunale. Some of these buildings date back to the Spanish domination, such as the Teatro Comunale, built in the 19th century.
