Welcome to the Province of Avellino!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about the beautiful province of Avellino, located in Campania and home to almost 400,000 inhabitants. Fun fact: it does not have access to the sea, but borders other provinces and regions including Puglia, Basilicata, and the metropolitan city of Naples.

Physical Geography

The territory of Avellino is mainly mountainous and hilly, but not uniform. The northern and eastern areas are characterized by plateaus and rolling hills where numerous hilltop villages can be found and rainfall is slightly lower. Instead, the southern and western sectors are more rugged, with limestone mountains reaching considerable heights and higher rainfall. Among the main mountains are Cervialto, Terminio, and Monte Calvello.

There are also numerous significant waterways such as the Calore Irpino river, which originates from Mount Accelica and flows into the Volturno River. Others include Sabato and Ufita, which are tributaries of Calore, Ofanto and Cervaro that flow into the Adriatic Sea, and Miscano and Sele - although the latter only crosses the province for short stretches.

The province of Avellino: mountains, lakes and culture.

Lakes

We all know that Italy offers plenty of options when it comes to lakes, such as the romantic Lake Como or the fascinating Lake Garda. Unfortunately, the province of Avellino has very few natural lakes, but Lake Laceno is definitely worth a visit.

The lake, which is of karst origin, was once much larger but has reduced due to faults opening up in the lakebed following the 1980 Irpinia earthquake. Apart from Lake Laceno, there is also Lake Luza Aquafets located in the high Cervaro valley in the municipality of Greci. It is the only Arbëreshë-speaking municipality located at the northernmost end of the province and the lake has existed since 1466.

Especially in the winter, the size of the lakes increases significantly, so if you are a fan of snow or ice skating, it might be the right time for a visit.

Conclusion

I hope this brief description has given you a general overview of the province of Avellino. Although the region is mainly mountainous, there are magnificent places to visit, such as the Montevergine Sanctuary, which is located at about 1263 meters above sea level. I also recommend trying the famous buffalo mozzarella, spicy sausages, and the DOCG Fiano di Avellino wine. Moreover, if you love nature, relaxing hilly landscapes, and picturesque hilltop villages, Avellino might be the perfect destination for you!
