Taverna
Discover Taverna together!
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Taverna, a small town in the province of Catanzaro, located at the foot of the beautiful Sila.
Physical geography
The territory of Taverna stretches from 358 to 1765 meters above sea level, and its highest mountain is Gariglione. It is a beautiful area, surrounded by woods and immersed in nature.
Origins of the name
Taverna's original name was Trischene, which in Greek means "three places" or "three tabernacles". According to legend, the three sisters of Priam, Astiochema, Medicastena and Attila, who survived the destruction of Troy, arrived in Uria (now a hamlet of the town of Sellia Marina) and built the city of Trischene there. The Greek origins are still evident today, thanks to the findings of ancient skeletons and coins minted with the effigy of the three tabernacles and the Minotaur.
History
Origins
Trischene lived under the dominion of the city of Croton and then, with the Roman expansion, came under the protection of Rome to avoid possible attacks by the Bruzi and Carthaginians.
Byzantine domination and first destruction
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Trischene fell under Byzantine domination. In 852, the city was destroyed by the Saracens along with other cities in Calabria, and the Duchy of Benevento took advantage of the situation to conquer much of the region. In 885, the Byzantine Emperor Basil I ordered the army led by Nicephorus Phocas the Elder to reconquer the area. During this period, the leader Jordan worked to rebuild the destroyed cities, and Taberna, now known as Taverna Vecchia, was founded.
Norman domination and second destruction
With the arrival of the Normans in the twelfth century, Taberna was conquered by the armies of Robert Guiscard and valorized by his nephew Baiolardo, who built a defensive system making it even more secure.
In short, the history of Taverna is ancient and fascinating, as demonstrated by the numerous monuments in the city, such as the churches of San Giovanni and Maria Santissima Immacolata.
I hope I have been helpful and piqued your interest in beautiful Taverna!
