Brief history of Tavazzano with Villavesco
Tavazzano and Villavesco are the ancient villages that make up the current city. Villavesco was first mentioned in 994 as "villa episcopi", a village owned by the Diocese of Lodi, while Tavazzano was attested in 1125 when a Xenodochium dedicated to St. John the Baptist was founded, placed at the point where the Strada statale 9 via Emilia crosses the Sillaro river.
In the Middle Ages, Villavesco belonged to the lords of Salerano sul Lambro (1189) and the Buttintrocca family (1657), and later to the Rezzonico, of which it was a fief until 1796. Villavesco lost its autonomy in the mid-eighteenth century and was annexed to Modignano.
Tavazzano, on the other hand, was the scene of a battle between the Milanese and a league of cities (Lodi, Cremona, Pavia, Bergamo and Como) called the Guado, or the "Fossato di Lodi", in 1193. In the Napoleonic period, Tavazzano and Pezzolo di Tavazzano were united with Modignano, but regained their autonomy with the establishment of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. The definitive aggregation of the municipalities took place in 1869, taking the name of Villavesco.
During the twentieth century, Tavazzano underwent strong urban and demographic expansion, especially in the area between the Strada statale 9 via Emilia and the Milan-Bologna Railway.
