History

The toponym Tavarnelle seems to derive from ''tabernulae'' and according to tradition, it is the place where postilions stopped on their way to Rome along the Via Francigena. Over the centuries, the village of Tavarnelle was never fortified and over time it merged with neighboring hamlets such as Borghetto, home to the Franciscan convent, and Mocale on the road to Marcialla.

The real development of Tavarnelle began in the nineteenth century, when the opening of the road to Rome allowed for a greater influx of travelers and goods. This also favored agriculture, so much so that a weekly market was established on Thursdays from 1822.

Administratively, the territory was linked to that of Barberino Val d'Elsa, but the development of Tavarnelle led to its administrative independence, which was sanctioned by the Royal Decree of December 18, 1892.
