Discovering Corbanese, a small village surrounded by nature
Corbanese is a hamlet of the Municipality of Tarzo, located in the province of Treviso. The village is situated in the southeastern part of the municipal territory, bordering with San Pietro di Feletto. Despite being nestled among the hills, Corbanese also features some flat areas. The territory of the village is characterized by the Mondragon mountain range (436 m above sea level) and the Stella mountain (418 m). The center is located along the course of the Cervano stream and some of its tributaries. The toponym "Corbanese" is said to derive from the Roman personal name "Corbanus".
The history of Corbanese through its monuments
The village of Corbanese bears witness to the history of the County of Castelnuovo, which encompassed the entire current municipal territory of Tarzo and the territory of Lago. Corbanese boasts two Roman-Medieval archaeological sites, one related to the first castle built on the basis of a pre-existing Roman tower by the noble Da Corbanese family, and the second related to Castelnuovo built by the vassals of the Municipality of Conegliano, Marco, and Buto Da Corbanese, incorporating the first one. The Castle of Corbanese, the seat of the County of Castelnuovo, played a fundamental role in the history of the territory. In 1307 AD, the Act of Exchange bore witness to its importance.
The parish church of Corbanese
The parish church of Corbanese has a very ancient history. First mentioned in 1216, the church was elevated to parish status in 1672. The current building was reconstructed after the earthquake that destroyed the original parish church of Santa Caterina in 1743. The church was consecrated on February 18, 1758, by the Bishop of Ceneda, Lorenzo Da Ponte. The organ present in the church, commissioned in 1859, was played for eight months by Kraus Elca, a Viennese musician of Jewish origin who had found refuge with the parish priest of Corbanese during the Nazi persecutions.
