From the Middle Ages to Modern Times: Tarvisio's historical evolution

The name "Tarvisio" derives from the Celtic population of the Taurisci. From the 11th century, the municipality was governed by the Chapter of Bamberg, and from the 12th century, it gained significant commercial importance. In 1456, the Bishop of Bamberg granted Tarvisio the privilege of holding an annual fair, which still takes place today. In the 15th century, Tarvisio saw the flourishing of the iron industry but also suffered the looting of the Turks in 1478 and 1492. The War of Gradisca (1615-18) involved the municipality of Tarvisio, which suffered significant damages.
