Tartano
Welcome to Tartano, the pearl of the lower Valtellina!
If you want to discover one of the most picturesque towns in the province of Sondrio, you're in the right place. Tartano, with its 196 inhabitants, awaits you in the heart of the Alps, immersed in a breathtaking landscape. In this article, we'll take you on a journey to discover the geography, history, and curiosities of this small but fascinating Valtellinese reality.
Physical Geography
Tartano, or "Tàrten" in the local Valtellinese dialect, is located in a beautiful side valley of the Valtellina, called Val Tartano. The town is situated on the Orobie side of the lower Valtellina, surrounded by mountains and forests that make it an ideal place for nature lovers. With its 196 inhabitants, Tartano is a small but welcoming town where you'll immediately feel at home.

History
Unfortunately, Tartano has also experienced difficult moments in its history, such as the Valtellina Flood of July 1987. On July 18 of that year, a violent flow of mud and debris swept away a condominium, La Quiete, moving it about 4 meters and causing dozens of victims. The underlying Gran Baita hotel was also involved in the disaster, with 11 tourists dead and several injured. This tragic event has remained etched in the memory of the Tartano community and the entire Valtellina.
Society
But despite the difficulties, the people of Tartano have continued to live and grow their town. Over the years, the population has remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 181 inhabitants in 1991 and 207 in 2011. Today, Tartano is a close-knit and cohesive community that knows how to live in harmony with nature and local traditions.
Administration
As a small town in the province of Sondrio, Tartano is part of a larger administrative reality that includes other towns in the lower Valtellina. The administration is currently led by Mayor Maurizio Masnada, who has been personally involved for several years in growing and developing the town.
Bridge in the Sky
Among the curiosities of Tartano is the famous "Bridge in the Sky," inaugurated in 2018 in the hamlet of Campo Tartano. This Tibetan bridge, an impressive 234 meters long and suspended 140 meters above the underlying bed of the Tartano stream, connects the hamlet of Campo with the town of Frasnino on the other side of the valley. Walking on the bridge in the sky is an exciting and unforgettable experience that will leave you breathless.
Notes
In Tartano, many outdoor activities can be done, such as mountain hiking, walks in the woods, and cycling along the Valtellina cycle path. The town is also famous for its cuisine, with typical dishes such as pizzoccheri, bresaola, and local cheeses that are truly delicious.
