The history of Taranta Peligna

The history of Taranta Peligna dates back to prehistoric times. In fact, a bronze axe from the first half of the 2nd millennium BC was found. In the 11th century, the municipality was a fiefdom of the Counts of Sangro, and in the 12th century, it was called "Tarantam." Later, in the 13th century, the inhabited center passed into the hands of Berardo di Acciano and Enrico di Portella. In the 15th century, the municipality became a fiefdom of the Caldora family. During World War II, the village was almost completely destroyed by the Germans, causing serious damage and significant emigration. However, Taranta Peligna managed to rebuild and become the legal seat of the national association Città delle Grotte.

World War II

Taranta Peligna was located along the Gustav Line during World War II. On October 26, 1943, commander Albert Kesselring ordered the population to abandon the village, as the houses would have been mined and blown up to prevent the allies from resupplying and taking cover. This "scorched earth" tactic caused serious damage and population emigration.

In conclusion, Taranta Peligna is a small Abruzzese municipality with a fascinating history from prehistoric times to World War II. Despite the damage suffered during the war, the municipality managed to rebuild itself and today is part of the Majella National Park. If you have the opportunity to visit this area of Abruzzo, do not miss the chance to visit Taranta Peligna to discover its beauty and ancient history.
