Discover San Polo

San Polo is a delightful hamlet located on a river terrace in the Tiber Valley, within the municipality of Tarano. The territory where the hamlet is located has a geological origin in the Pleistocene era. San Polo is traversed by the Aia stream, a tributary of the Tiber.

The History of San Polo

The fortification of San Polo has ancient origins linked to the events of the decline of the Roman municipality of Forum Novum. In the past, the trans-Tiberian monastery of S. Andrea in Flumine owned several landed properties in the territory of San Polo. During the Roman revolt led by Cola di Rienzo in 1347, San Polo joined the cause and appointed a rector.

During the early decades of the 1800s, San Polo experienced a period of autonomy as an independent municipality. Later, it became part of the municipality of Collevecchio as a hamlet. Finally, in 1870, San Polo was annexed to the municipality of Tarano.
