Welcome to the Province of Rimini
Hello everyone and welcome to the province of Rimini, one of the most beautiful and fascinating provinces in Emilia-Romagna. With a population of over 339,000 inhabitants and an area of 863.62 km², it is the southernmost province in Northern Italy.
The History of the Province of Rimini
The province of Rimini was established on paper in 1992, separating from the territory of the former province of Forlì that became, at the same time, the province of Forlì-Cesena. The first elections and the installation of the first provincial council took place in 1995.
The province of Rimini grew in 2009, incorporating seven municipalities in Valmarecchia: Casteldelci, Maiolo, Novafeltria, Pennabilli, San Leo, Sant'Agata Feltria, and Talamello, previously part of the territory of the province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region. After a local referendum, the Parliament of the Italian Republic approved the region's change from Marche to Emilia-Romagna. In 2021, the municipalities of Montecopiolo and Sassofeltrio became part of the province of Rimini after a long parliamentary journey similar to that of the municipalities of Alta Valmarecchia.
Geography and Territory
The province of Rimini is a geological marvel. The territory is partially delimited to the north by the course of the Uso stream, which separates it from the province of Forlì-Cesena, and to the south by the Tavollo stream, which separates it from Marche. It consists of five morphologically and landscape homogeneous areas.
Along the Adriatic Sea, which represents the eastern limit of the provincial territory, there is a long and narrow plain coastal strip, the Romagna Riviera, famous for its beach resorts like Rimini, Riccione, Cattolica, Bellaria-Igea Marina, and Misano Adriatico.
The north-eastern sector of the province, consisting of the extreme southern part of the Po Valley, is predominantly agricultural, although notably transformed by the presence of residential settlements, commercial centers, and road and railway infrastructures.
