Prossenicco
Introduction
Hello friends! Today I will talk about Prossenicco, a small hamlet located in the eastern area of the province of Udine, corresponding to the Friulian Slavia. With its 35 inhabitants, it is a real hidden gem nestled among the mountains of the Southern Julian Pre-Alps. Come and discover this locality with me!
Physical Geography
Territory
Prossenicco is located halfway up the Ostra Cras mountain, on the left bank of the Lerada stream valley, in the upper basin of the Natisone river. The mountainous territory on which it stands belongs to the Southern Julian Pre-Alps. The hamlet is located at an average altitude of 552 meters.
Landscape
The landscape is characterized by surrounding mountains and hills that create a natural amphitheater. To the west are Mount Coreda, Mount Spich and Mount Jauar. To the south, Mount Joanaz, Mount Vogu and Mount Lubia, as well as the neighboring Slovenian locality of Robedischis. To the east, Mount Mia and Mount Nero with its chain. To the northeast are Cima Crassi and Mount Stol.
Hydrography
The territory of Prossenicco belongs to the watershed of the Isonzo river through the sub-basin of the Natisone, which originates near the locality from the confluence of the Rio Nero with the Rio Bianco.
Tectonics and Geology
The orographic landscape is influenced by two different orogeneses: the Eastern Southern Alps orogeny and the older Dinaric orogeny. The area is also marked by the "periadriatic thrust line", a reverse fault that determines the thrust of the main Triassic dolomite on the thick base of Eocene flysch. In areas with a prevalence of limestone, such as Mount Joanaz, the karst phenomenon is widespread.
Glaciation
During the Würm Glaciation, the upper basin of the Natisone was occupied by a branch of the Isonzo glacier, through the Starasella pass. In the area there are glacial moraines and clay deposits downstream of the village as evidence of the presence of the glacier.

I hope that this brief virtual journey to Prossenicco has piqued your interest in the beauty of the area and its geological history. If you have the opportunity, I recommend visiting the area and immersing yourself in the surrounding nature.
