Monteaperta

Welcome to Monteaperta, the small Cortina!

Hello friends! Today I will tell you about Monteaperta, a beautiful hamlet of Taipana, in the province of Udine, which I love to visit when I go to see my family in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Monteaperta is also known by the Slovenian name ''Viškorša'' or in Friulian ''Montviarte'' or ''Monviarte'', but it is nicknamed the ''small Cortina'' for its panoramic position between the peaks of the Julian Prealps.

Physical geography: nature, panoramas and outdoor activities

Monteaperta is located at 659 meters above sea level, between the peaks of the Julian Prealps, and is surrounded by the Cornappo, Torre and Isonzo streams. The hamlet offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and is immersed in unspoiled nature, which invites long walks in the open air. In fact, Monteaperta is part of the ''Iter Aquileiense'' or ''Cammino Celeste'', a pilgrimage route that crosses Friuli-Venezia Giulia and leads to the sanctuary of Maria Saal, in Austria. The area is rich in springs, such as the Bishop's spring, and hiking trails that lead to the discovery of the most unusual panoramas of the Julian Prealps. In addition, it is possible to practice mountain biking, climbing and ski mountaineering in the winter.

The history of the village: between canonical inspections and ancient Friulian

The village was once known as ''Campo di Miglio'', but later took the name of Monteaperto and finally, the current one of Monteaperta. This hamlet, once independent, was called ''Villa di Monteaperta'' and also included the hamlets of Cornappo, Ponte Sambo and Debellis. A curiosity? In 1737 the village was mentioned in the canonical inspection as ''Villa di Monteaperta''! Over the centuries, the dialect spoken in Monteaperta, Friulian, has become a language spoken only by the elderly, but the preservation of the language has been preserved thanks to local folk traditions.

The geology of Monteaperta: from marls and sandstones to dolomitic limestones

Monteaperta extends over post-glacial debris cones and is characterized by the presence of geological formations such as the Flysch, made up of marls and sandstones of the Eocene, which appear in the promontory of Briec and Celò, at Ponte Sambo and Debellis. But not only that: the Grand Monte, the mountain range near the hamlet, is composed of friable dolomites and clear dolomite limestones in layers. The upper Carnian Triassic, on the other hand, is composed of compact gray limestones, and is well visible on the top of the Grand Monte. We are waiting for you in Monteaperta to discover these natural wonders!

Conclusion: between nature, history and geology, Monteaperta is waiting for you!
