Sorbo

Sorbo, a curious-named fraction of Tagliacozzo

Sorbo is a small fraction of the municipality of Tagliacozzo, in the province of L'Aquila, located on the western crest of Mount San Nicola at 825 meters above sea level. The village borders the fractions of Poggio Filippo to the north, Colle San Giacomo and the territory of Villa San Sebastiano to the west and Scurcola Marsicana to the south. Despite its small size, Sorbo has a rich history full of charm and mystery.

History of Sorbo

The name of the village derives from the presence of Sorbus plants on the mountain overlooking the town. In fact, funerary stelae have been found that confirm the presence of the first settlers in 303 BC. During the imperial period, a temple dedicated to Augustus will arise, but the village will also mark the border between Equi and Marsi. In 1826, a Tito Tituleio stele and a milestone were found near the church of Santa Maria, which today is located in the square of the village, a sign of the proximity of the ancient Via Tiburtina Valeria.
