A quick look at the history of Sutrio

Sutrio has an ancient history, and it is believed to be one of the oldest human settlements in all of Carnia. Its name appears in a document for the first time in 1300, but in popular tradition, the memory of a medieval castle that was to be located on the hill of All Saints remains. This hill is now home to the Church of All Saints, built at the beginning of the 19th century by the architect Francesco Schiavi of Tolmezzo, with the ancient seventeenth-century bell tower of a previous church.

In Sutrio, the population also uses the Friulian language

In addition to the Italian language, the population of Sutrio also uses the Friulian language. According to Resolution No. 2680 of August 3, 2001, of the Executive of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region, the Municipality of Sutrio is included among the Italian municipalities of Friulian language for the implementation of Law no. 482/99, Regional Law no. 15/96, and Regional Law no. 29/2007. The Friulian language spoken in Sutrio is a variant of Carnian Friulian.

The culture of Sutrio: events for all tastes

Sutrio offers a wide variety of events, representative of the local culture and tradition. Among these, we have selected three events that may interest you.

Villages and Nativity Scenes (from Christmas to Epiphany)

Sutrio hosts a display of artisanal Nativity scenes, which winds through the villages of the municipality. During the tour, it is possible to rediscover courtyards, loggias, and cellars of the most characteristic houses in the municipality. Within this event, concerts are organized, the representation of the living Nativity scene, and the possibility of seeing the woodworking in artisanal shops. At the heart of the event is the animated Nativity scene of Teno, built over 30 years of work by the great artisan master of Sutrio, Gaudenzio Straulino.

Fasin la mede – Hay Festival (Last Sunday of July)

This event recalls the work of haymaking on Mount Zoncolan: the "setors" (men) mow the grass, and "las vores" (women) build "las Medes" (large bundles of hay). During the day, you eat in traditional "stavoli," and the various tasting spots make up a gastronomic-naturalistic journey. It is a unique experience that will allow you to immerse yourself in the history and culture of the municipality.

Magic of Wood (First Sunday of September)

The Magic of Wood represents woodworking in all its forms and curiosities. The villages of the municipality will host you to introduce you to the beauty and mastery that hides behind this ancient local craftsmanship.
