Discovering the municipality of Suisio

Hello friends! Today we are going to discover the municipality of Suisio, located in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy, and with a population of about 3772 inhabitants.

Physical geography

Suisio is located on the Bergamo Island, on the left bank of the Adda River. The land on which the town is built has been shaped by the action of glaciers and rivers over the centuries. The marine rocks of Canto Basso and Monte Giglio were responsible for the first geological formation. During the Ice Age, an ancient glacier covered the town, and two other Orobian glaciers reached the area, carrying rocks and debris that shaped the land.

Later on, the glaciers melted, and heavy rains raised the level of rivers and streams, which covered the Bergamo Island with a large lake called Lago Gerundo. The land where Suisio was located at that time was flooded, but this long flood deposited the same layer of fertile land that is now used for agriculture and smells of good food!

The rivers dug their own beds, and from Lago Gerundo, the lands of Bergamo Island emerged, enclosed to the north by Canto Basso, to the east by the Brembo River, and to the west by the Adda River.

In the 1387 code of the Vatican Apostolic Library, the municipality of Suisio is mentioned as COMMUNIS DE SUIXIO.
