The province of South Sardinia: an overview

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about the province of South Sardinia, one of the Italian provinces of Sardinia, which has about 335,108 inhabitants. This province was established with Regional Law No. 2 of February 4, 2016 and includes the territories of the former provinces of Carbonia-Iglesias and Medio Campidano, as well as some municipalities in the province of Cagliari and other municipalities such as Genoni and Seui. The capital of the province is Carbonia, the most populous municipality in the region.

Physical geography

The province of South Sardinia occupies the southern part of Sardinia and is bordered to the south by the metropolitan city of Cagliari, to the northeast by the province of Nuoro, and to the northwest by the province of Oristano. The territory is characterized by a vast plain, called Campidano, bounded to the west, east, and north by mountain groups such as the Sette Fratelli massif, Monte Genis, Monte Linas, the mountains of Sulcis, and the southern portion of the Gennargentu massif. The provincial territory also includes numerous islands and archipelagos, such as the islands of the Sulcis archipelago, Serpentara Island, Cavoli Island, and other smaller islands.

Orography

The province of South Sardinia has a varied orography. Among the most important mountain groups are the Sette Fratelli massif, where coal was once mined, Monte Genis, Monte Linas, the mountains of Sulcis, and the southern portion of the Gennargentu massif.

Hydrography

The province of South Sardinia is crossed by numerous rivers, including the Cixerri, Flumini Mannu, and Flumendosa. In the provincial territory, there are also some artificial lakes, such as the Monte Pranu Dam, the Bau Pressiu Dam, Lake Corsi, the Leni Dam, the Medau Zirimilis Dam, and Lake Mulargia.

Seas

The province of South Sardinia is bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Sardinian Sea and has numerous beaches, such as Dune di Piscinas, the Costa Verde, Masua, Fontanamare, the islands of Sant'Antioco and San Pietro, Porto Pino, Teulada, Chia (Domus de Maria), Villasimius, and Costa Rei.

History

The province of South Sardinia was established in 2016 with Regional Law No. 2 of February 4. Prior to the 2016 provincial reform, the provincial territory was part of the provinces of Carbonia-Iglesias and Medio Campidano. In 2021, a new reform of the Sardinian local authorities provided for the abolition of the province of South Sardinia, which will pass to the territories of the new provinces of Medio Campidano and Sulcis Iglesiente. The management of the remaining territory of South Sardinia will be entrusted to the metropolitan city of Cagliari.
