This picturesque place was originally a suburb of Atella's agro, a famous ancient city in the region, renowned for being the birthplace of Roman comedy.

Physical geography

Succivo lies in the agro atellano, southeast of agro aversano, right next to the ancient city of Atella.

Etymology

The name Succivo comes from the Latin ''subsecivusager'', which referred to the poor land, i.e. the remains of uncultivated and unassignable land.

History

The oldest documents mentioning Teverolaccio, also known as ''Castello di Teverolaccio'', ''Piano di Teverolaccio'', ''Borgo di Teverolaccio'' and ''Casale di Teverolaccio'', date back to 1522. In that period, the owner of that place was Baron Giovan Battista Palumbo.

Teverolaccio is one of the most attractive places in the town, composed of a tower, a castle, a church dedicated to San Sossio and a cluster of houses, all enclosed by walls, the perimeter of which is still clearly visible. Before the establishment of the municipality of Atella di Napoli, it also included Casapuzzano.

Symbols

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Succivo consists of an image of Saint Paul, on a silver field, holding a sword with the tip resting on the ground in his right hand.

Monuments and places of interest

Succivo has monuments and places of great cultural interest, such as the Church of the Transfiguration, the Church of San Sossio, the Archaeological Museum of the Agro Atellano, the Chapel of the Madonna dell'Oglio and the Church Maria Santissima Atellana.
