Sturno

Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about the history of the Unione Sportiva Avellino 1912, the football team from Avellino that currently plays in the third division of the Italian championship. The history of this club begins in 1912, when the first football team in Avellino was founded. Since then, the city's sporting tradition has seen many clubs following refoundations, but Avellino has stood out in Serie A, a category in which it played continuously from 1978 to 1988.

From Origins to the 1960s

The history of Avellino begins on December 12, 1912 with the founding of Unione Sportiva Avellino. The team immediately participates in unofficial minor tournaments, wearing a kit that is still not white and green. The first president is Alfonso Di Marzo Capozzi, owner of sulfur mines. In the 1929-1930 Third Division season, it plays in the Terza Divisione Campana, facing fallen Italian football nobles like Internapoli. In the following years, the team continues to participate in minor competitions and in 1962, it reaches Serie D.

The 1970s and Glory in Serie A

In 1973, Avellino is promoted to Serie C and only five years later, in 1978, reaches Serie A for the first time in its history. The team immediately gains respect from opponents and fans, consolidating its presence in the top level with 10 consecutive seasons from 1978 to 1988. In its first season in Serie A, Avellino reaches ninth place in the standings, followed by another positive season in tenth place. The team's moment of greatest success comes in the 1985-86 season, when Avellino reaches sixth place in the standings, qualifying for the UEFA Cup.

History of U.S. Avellino 1912: from Serie A to bankruptcy and rebirth.

From Decline to Bankruptcy

The subsequent years are marked by a decline that leads the team to be relegated to Serie B and then to Serie C1. In 2009-2010, Avellino is again promoted to Serie B, but the team suffers an immediate relegation following a disastrous season. In 2010, the club is declared bankrupt and removed from the Italian Football Federation. As a result of these events, a new club was founded under the name Avellino Calcio 12 Società Sportiva Dilettantistica, which then in June 2010 assumed the name Associazione Sportiva Avellino 1912. In 2018, the club fails to obtain the license for the Serie B championship, and a new club is founded which takes the name of U.S. Avellino 1912 and restarts from Serie D.

The history of Avellino has been characterized by ups and downs, but the club has always known how to react to difficulties and come back on track with the passion and commitment of its fans. Despite the difficulties and defeats, Avellino fans remain loyal to their team and its white and green colors, and continue to enthusiastically support the team on the field. This is the true sporting spirit that animates Avellino, a club with a long and proud football tradition that continues to excite its fans.
