Stroppo
Welcome to Stroppo, a gem in the Valle Maira!
The municipality of Stroppo is located in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont, and has only 96 inhabitants, but don't be fooled by its size, this place has a lot to offer its visitors.
Physical geography
Stroppo stretches from the first hamlet of Noufresio, at 850 meters above sea level, to the border with Elva and Sampeyre, at over 2000 meters in altitude. Its central position in the Valle Maira allows visitors to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Cozie Alps.
History
Stroppo was once the ancient capital of the Upper Valle Maira. The coat of arms and the flag of the municipality were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 1958 and represent two branches of a tree, symbolizing the close relationship between the community and nature.
Monuments and places of interest
The Church of San Giovanni Battista, a national monument, represents the heart of the community and is located in the Paschero capital. Opposite it is the "Mountain School Museum," which documents the life of students at the Alpine Boarding School, the only middle school in the Upper Valle Maira. The Church of San Pietro e Paolo, on the road to Elva, features a Gothic spire Romanesque bell tower entirely built without mortar. The Lazzaretto in Borgata Caudano, a former hospital during the time of the plague, has been purchased and restored by the municipality. Finally, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Morinesio, near the village of Morinesio, is a very evocative place of prayer.
Society
The municipality has lost 94.13% of its population compared to the census with the highest number of residents in 1871, but the current community is very active. Stroppo has a strong tradition of agriculture and pastoralism and is immersed in a splendid natural environment.
