Strigno

Discovering Strigno

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Strigno, a hamlet of the municipality of Castel Ivano, located in the province of Trento. This small town has about 1424 inhabitants, and is only a 30-minute drive from the city of Trento.

History

Strigno has an interesting history: there was a military garrison and it was frequented by Austrian bourgeoisie in the second half of the nineteenth century, thanks to its mild climate. In the square, in the shade of an ulmus (i.e. an elm), the civic community would gather, but unfortunately Giorgio Pucler was also hanged here, captured and killed by rebels in the distant 1525.

During World War I, Strigno was evacuated for security reasons, given its proximity to the front. But perhaps not everyone knows that Strigno was also an important stage of Italian resistance during the Nazi-fascism regime. From Badoglio's proclamation of September 8, 1943 until May 1945, the Italian resistance against Nazi-fascism saw the partisans organized in the "Gherlenda" Battalion of the Antonio Gramsci Garibaldina Brigade of Feltre.

Monuments and places of interest

Despite being a small hamlet, Strigno boasts numerous religious and civil architectures of great value. The Church of the Immaculate, located in the lower part of the village, is the main place of worship in Strigno. Inside the church, there is a valuable painting by Eugenio Prati, but attention should also be paid to the right altar with the Pietà by Giovanni Marchiori from around 1750. The bell tower is medieval, while the current building dates back to 1827 but was restored in 1921 after being damaged during World War I. The interior of the sacred building has three aisles. In the square, next to the church, there is the ''Casa già Ceschi'' in Baroque style. Also worth mentioning is the church of Saints Vito, Modesto, and Crescenzia.

Another place of interest is the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto which is considered a miraculous sanctuary and inside which you can admire a stone from the homonymous Loreto Sanctuary. Let us not forget the civil architecture: Palazzo Floriani, built on a previous residence and rebuilt in 1821 by the Ceschi family, a local family. Near the hamlet is also the Dosso di Penile, a prehistoric castle.

Society and demography

Society in Strigno is very varied. The economy, in fact, has evolved from intense agricultural and artisanal activity to an advanced tertiary sector, during the nineteenth century. At the beginning of the century, the town was known for silk production, a lace factory, a workshop for religious objects, and a flourishing craftsmanship. Moreover, it exported wine and chestnuts to Vienna. However, today there is almost nothing left of these activities.

Administration

Strigno has undergone several administrative changes, such as the aggregation of territories of the suppressed municipalities of Ivano-Fracena, Samone (Trentino-Alto Adige), Scurelle, Spera, and Villa Agnedo in 1928 and the detachment of territories for the reconstitution of the municipalities of Ivano-Fracena (pop. 323), Samone (Trentino-Alto Adige) (pop. 510), Scurelle (pop. 990), Spera (pop. 506) and Villa Agnedo (pop. 811) in 1947.

This is a brief overview of Strigno, a town with a very interesting history. If you are visiting the area, along with the city of Trento, I recommend making a stop in Strigno to discover all the wonders it has to offer.
