The origins of the name

In the Middle Ages, the toponym "Histricanum" is present in the Bull of erection of the Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno of 1066. Recently, through studies and research, it has been demonstrated that the name Striano derives precisely from the characteristic configuration of the strianese lands called "stigati", and the way they were worked.

The history of Striano

The first settlements in the strianese territory date back to the 9th century BC. In the village that arose between the mid-Bronze Age and the 6th century BC, remains of a necropolis were found on the banks of the Sarno river. Reclaimed by the Opici, indigenous peoples who increased the cultivation of cereals and grapes in the fertile valley, the territory of Striano was then conquered by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, the municipality became a fiefdom of the nobleman Guglielmo Porzano and in 1806 it was annexed to the Kingdom of Naples. After the Unification of Italy, Striano was affected by a strong industrial development, thanks to the opening of new textile factories and the construction of important infrastructure.
