Strevi

A Friendly Introduction to Strevi

Hello! Today I want to talk to you about Strevi, a municipality in the Piedmont region, located in the province of Alessandria. With a population of 1,938, Strevi is a beautiful town located about thirty kilometers from the capital city, Alessandria, and about seven kilometers from Acqui Terme. If you haven't been there before, you absolutely have to visit!

The Physical Geography of Strevi

Strevi is located along the foothills that border the plain on the left bank of the Bormida River. It is made up of two districts, Superiore and Inferiore - or in Piedmontese, "Borg ad sura" and "Borg ad suta." The ancient residential nucleus is located here, as well as the more recent settlements to the north and south, along what used to be the State Road 30. Now, thanks to the construction of a new road, these settlements, like those of "il Girasole" and the "piscine" area, are livable and have improved vehicular traffic.

Discover the beauty of Strevi: between biscuits, wine and history.

The Famous Production of Amaretto Biscuits and Wine

Strevi is famous for the production of a particular type of biscuit called "biscotto amaretto." But not only that; here you can also find sun-drenched hills dedicated to the production of grapes, which produce a fine wine known all over the world.

The Origins of the Name Strevi

The name Strevi may derive from ''Septem viri,'' an important Roman priestly college. The first mention of Strevi as ''Septevro'' dates back to 991, in the foundation document of the abbey of San Quintino di Spigno Monferrato.

The History of Strevi

In the town's coat of arms, we see seven golden cups representing seven brothers - the "Septem Ebrii" - who founded the town with their love for wine, along with the three families of sober men who founded the nearby town of Trisobbio. The church of San Michele Arcangelo, dating back to the fifteenth century, was radically transformed in the second half of the 1700s in a baroque style by the architect Giuseppe Caselli. Inside the church, there are frescoes by Pietro Ivaldi from Ponzone and a canvas by the school of Guido Reni. In the upper district, you can admire some remains of the fifteenth-century city walls.

The Society of Strevi

Strevi has a strong agricultural and wine-making vocation. Here, numerous ethnic groups and minorities can also be found, such as Moroccan, Romanian, and North Macedonian.

The Economy of Strevi

Strevi is famous for its production of fine grapes and is part of the "city of wine" network. However, the town also has other agricultural productions. The economy of Strevi is mainly based on its proximity to other cities in the region, such as Alessandria and Acqui Terme.

So there you have it, everything you need to know about Strevi! I can't wait to visit in person and discover more about its culture and beauty. How about you?
