Stio: a treasure of Cilento with ancient history and unspoiled nature.

The history of Stio

The village of Stio has very ancient origins, dating back to the Lucanian era of the 3rd-4th century BC. Artifacts from that period are found in the locality of "Chiano Rosario", such as loom weights, vases, and other household objects.

Subsequently, in Norman times, the hamlet of Stio was aggregated to the State of Magliano, along with four other hamlets. The locality became an autonomous University with its own symbol depicting three hammers on a rampant lion.

The history of Stio is intertwined with the fortunes of the State of Magliano and the subsequent Barony until 1806, when it was elected as the capital of the municipality after the abolition of feudalism.

The monuments and places of interest in Stio

The historic center of Stio is a true treasure to discover. Already in Norman times, this neighborhood was fortified. The recent restoration of the former church of San Pietro, south of the town, has highlighted the medieval construction walls, proving that there was a fortress controlling the road that connected the castles of Gioi and Magliano.

Another place of interest is the "Valle dei Mulini", reachable after a short walk through dense vegetation and dirt paths. Here, along a characteristic river, you can admire the ruins of five water mills, some dating back to 1300.

In some areas of the river, you can find cool natural pools, such as the particular basin called "Puzzo re zi Rafaili" which is located downstream of a natural and wild landscape characterized by wooden stairs and stone tables with chairs.

Stio, a gem in Cilento

In conclusion, Stio is a charming and welcoming location that deserves to be visited. Its historic center, the water mills, and the river valley offer a unique spectacle, together with the beauty of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. If you have the opportunity to pass through these parts, don't miss the chance to visit Stio!
