History

The history of Stintino has rather recent origins. In 1885, the Depretis VI Government decided to establish a health quarantine station on the island of Asinara. Meanwhile, shepherds of Sardinian origin and fishermen from Camogli and Ponza were also sent to the same island. When, in 1885, the latter were evicted, 45 fishing families settled in Stintino. Thanks to the "Comunione dei 45", the village was founded and divided in an orderly manner on a peninsula squeezed between two arms of the sea: hence the name "isthintìnu", which in Sassarese language means "intestine or bowel".

Culture and traditions

Stintino has a rich religious tradition, and is home to the religious Brotherhood of the Blessed Virgin of Defense, patron saint of the town. Every year, in May, the feast of Sant'Isidoro in Ercoli is held, while on September 8th the procession at sea of the Madonna della Difesa, patron saint of the town, takes place. In addition, to encourage fishing activity, Stintino's fishermen founded the Mutual Cooperative Society of Stintino fishermen in 1904.
