Ferdinandea is a vast territory immersed in the nature of the Calabrian Serre, rich in beech and Abies forests. It is located between the municipalities of Stilo, Bivongi, Brognaturo, Mongiana, and Serra San Bruno, offering numerous activities for visitors.

Geology and geography

The area is characterized by biotic acid rocks such as quartz, mouronite, and granite, with low permeability. It is located at the foot of the Serra di Chindilli and is crossed by three streams: Folea, L'Azzarola, and Stilaro.

The climate is typical of the hot montane fagetum with annual precipitation of 2000 mm, but humidity is always above 50% throughout the year. The flora is mainly composed of Abies Alba, beech and Pinus resinosa, but chestnut, oak and poplar are also present. There are five sources of the rivers Stilaro, Assi, and the streams Ruggero, Don Luca, and Mula.

History

Ferdinandea is rich in history and culture. In 1833, Ferdinand II of Bourbon visited the area to inaugurate the new ironworks, which served to produce pig iron in support of those in Mongiana. Subsequently, residential and administrative buildings, stables, and stables were built.

With the birth of the Italian state, the government auctioned off the steelworks and forests in the area. The new owner, former Garibaldino and parliamentarian Achille Fazzari, tried to reactivate the steel center but eventually converted everything into an agricultural-pastoral company. During that period, two railway sections were also built. For 40 years, Ferdinandea became an important economic center in Calabria and also hosted the writer Matilde Serao.

Today

Currently, Ferdinandea is a tourist destination. It is possible to visit the Bourbon villa, the ironworks, or go hiking on trails marked by the Italian Alpine Club. In addition, the area offers mineral water production, a small hydroelectric power plant, and sawmills.
