Physical Geography

Steazzano is situated in the Bergamo plain, about 4 kilometers south of Bergamo, with which it shares a homogeneous urban area. The territory is characterized by a temperate climate and proximity to the Prealps, which makes the weather rather rainy. This also makes it similar to the nearby Orio al Serio, well-known for its international airport.

Stezzano: history, geography and beauties in Lombardy.

History

However, Stezzano is above all a city of history, which dates back to the Roman Empire. Numerous findings from that period testify to its importance, including the plaque dedicated to Emperor Antonino Pio and a 1st-century funerary epigraph, housed in the archaeological museum of Bergamo.

Later, the territory of Stezzano was affected by the Ostrogoths, to whom some furnishings such as earrings and golden stirrups found in the surrounding countryside near the main settlement and dating back to the 5th century are attributable. After the Ostrogothic invasions, the Longobards and Franks settled in this area.

The history of Stezzano during the Middle Ages is marked by numerous clashes between the Guelph and Ghibelline factions, as happened throughout Lombardy. The population then decided to build a fortified building, of which most of the citizens owned small shares. The castle, built in 1084, had a moat and a lookout tower, located near an intersection of commercial routes that favored trade between the north and south of the Peninsula.

During this period, the Suardi family became increasingly influential in Stezzano and drove the development of the town by promoting the cultivation of their land on the outskirts of the settlement through the construction of irrigation canals derived from the Serio River. Nonetheless, the village was not immune to attacks from enemies: in fact, in 1312, it was occupied by the Colleoni family.

During the period of the struggles between the Ghibelline and Guelph factions, there was an episode of looting of the houses of the Suardi family by troops led by Pandolfo III Malatesta, which caused several casualties among the inhabitants.

Beauty of Stezzano

In addition to the history and culture that characterizes the territory of Stezzano, the place also offers numerous beauties, such as the Church of San Bartolomeo Martire, built in the early 16th century and recently restored. The church is dominated by the presence of the bell tower covered with colorful majolica.

Not only churches but also historic palaces characterize the town. Among these is the Palazzo Verro, built in the second half of the 18th century by the Verro family, which, at the time of its construction, was one of the most important cultural centers of the entire region.

Events and Culture

But Stezzano is not only history and architecture: the town also offers events and cultural events that attract visitors from all over the world. Among these, the Beer Festival, one of the most important events linked to the tasting of artisanal beer produced throughout the region; the Feast of San Bartolomeo, which takes place in August and attracts visitors thanks to the market and fair that take place in conjunction with the solemn religious triduum.

In addition, Stezzano is also known for its restaurants and the typical cuisine of its territory. You can taste polenta, Milanese risotto, Milanese-style cutlets, cod, and mixed vegetable sauté with olive oil.
