Trafoi

The story of Trafoi

Trafoi is a geographical fraction of Stelvio, in the autonomous province of Bolzano, located in Alta Val Venosta. The valley has been inhabited since 1221, but the toponym Trafoi is mentioned in 1304 as ''Traful''. The number 'three' was then considered, and hence: three leaves, three mouths, three huts, three hearths. More recently, the origin has been considered as ''Tra-auer'', meaning "twisting path". The village began to be inhabited around 1520, with the beginning of the Thöni, Plazer and Ortler dynasties. In the 19th century, Trafoi became more and more of a tourist destination, until it was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War, which proved to be a tragedy for the village located along the border ridge.

Monuments and places of interest

Trafoi is a city rich in monuments and places of interest. These include the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the parish church, and the Three Sacred Fountains, at an altitude of 1,607 m. The church was built in 1229 and restored between 1701 and 1702, near the three springs that are said to have healing properties.
