Solda: a tourist resort at the foot of Ortles-Cevedale

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about Solda, a village in the municipality of Stelvio located in the Valle di Solda, in the autonomous province of Bolzano, at 1,906 meters above sea level. This location is famous as a winter and summer tourist destination and offers a wide range of activities and attractions.

Access to the mountains through a dense network of trails and cable cars

Solda allows access to the mountain massif of Ortles-Cevedale through a dense network of trails, a cable car called "Funivia di Solda", a chairlift called "Seggiovia dell'Orso" and a gondola formerly called "Seggiovia Pulpito". It is a perfect base for hikers and mountaineers who want to venture onto the surrounding mountains.

In addition, Reinhold Messner, the famous Italian mountaineer, decided to build one of his museum headquarters here called "At the end of the world" and imported a dozen Tibetan yaks, which can be visited by tourists.

Places of interest

Religious architecture

The old parish church of Solda, also known as "Altepfarrkirche", is a simple rectangular construction, equipped with a polygonal choir and a lateral bell tower. Its construction dates back to the 16th century, but has been known since 1369. The interior of the church features pictorial fragments dating back to that period. The altarpiece, depicting Gertrude of Helfta, is the work of the Pusterese Johann Siess (1851). On the walls are instead represented the Stations of the Cross and the burial of Jesus (1558).

Not far from the old church is the new parish church of Santa Geltrude, which is considerably larger.

Mountain huts

Solda is also an important starting point for excursions and climbs on the surrounding mountains. It is possible to reach the Rifugio Città di Milano (2,581 meters) and the Rifugio Payer, the latter by taking trail number 4 from the old chapel. The imposing Payer refuge (3,029 meters above sea level) can boast of being the highest resting point along the highest and most well-known mountain in Alto Adige: the Ortles (3,905 meters above sea level).
