Staiti
Let's discover Staiti: a charming and intimate municipality in Calabria
Welcome to Staiti, a small municipality located in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria, in the region of Calabria. With only 155 inhabitants, it is the least populated municipality in the region. However, this village perched on the side of Rocca Giambatore at 550 meters above sea level offers a splendid view of the Bruzzano river valley. In this article, we will take you on a journey to discover Staiti, its history, tourist attractions, culture, and traditions.
Physical geography: discovering the surrounding territory
As previously mentioned, Staiti is situated at 550 meters above sea level, on the side of Rocca Giambatore. This elevated position offers a spectacular panorama of the vast Bruzzano river valley and the Aspromonte National Park, located to the south. Its elevated position may give the impression of precariousness, but at the same time, one can admire the sense of security given by the medieval fortifications surrounding the village.
History: an anciently fascinating village
The history of Staiti dates back to the 1500s when it was a surveillance post that was part of the Brancaleone feud, ruled by Geronimo Ruffo di Calabria. It was when the town was purchased by the Staiti family that it was given its current name. The family fortified the village, which then passed to the Carafa di Roccella Jonica princes until 1806, the era of the abolition of feudalism.
The settlement was built on top of the rock, following the orography of the terrain, and that is why it seems almost embedded in the rock itself. The Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria dominates the social and economic life of the town, where the current population of 155 inhabitants differs greatly from the flourishing past, which reached 1500 inhabitants.
Monuments and places of interest: among the beauties of the past
Staiti houses some great tourist attractions, including the Church of Santa Maria di Tridetti, declared a national monument because it dates back to the early Norman times, around the 11th century. The ancient building originally housed a monastic community of Basilian rite, and presents elements of beauty that reflect the fusion of Greek and Norman influences in the region. The surrounding area of the Church is equally fascinating as it offers a panoramic view of the surrounding valley.
Society: demographic evolution and a multiethnic community
The small community of Staiti has undergone demographic changes in recent years, with a decrease in population. According to ISTAT data as of September 30th, 2012, Staiti is the least populated municipality in Calabria. However, the resident foreign population accounts for 2.7% of the total resident population, with 11 people of Romanian nationality.
Traditions and folklore: the festival of Sant'Anna
The festival of Sant'Anna constitutes the culminating moment of the religious and civil life of Staiti. This festival has very ancient roots and celebrates the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The festival is celebrated annually on July 26th with processions and celebrations.
In conclusion, Staiti represents an example of integration between the history and natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. Despite being a very small municipality, it offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in a suggestive and adventurous atmosphere. If you are looking for a quiet and medieval place to spend your holidays, Staiti is definitely a destination not to be missed.
