History

Origins

Staffolo has very ancient origins. The municipal territory has in fact been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. The Picene civilization, the Umbro-Etruscan and the Roman also left their mark. The inhabited center was born on a previous Roman pagus, as evidenced by several inscriptions found on site. In the Lombard era, the village took the name of "Staffil" to emphasize the line of the historical border between the territories of the north and south. The Cima lordship lasted in the history of the town for about four centuries, interspersed with long periods in which the town made itself a free municipality. In 1219, there was the first attestation of the municipal freedoms of Staffolo and its large territory, which extended along the Musone valley.

The presence of St. Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi also lived in the territory of Staffolo with his friend Egidio. The Franciscan presence became a determining element in the history of the community. In fact, one of the first Franciscan convents of the Marche region was established in the center of the town, perhaps already existing in 1230.
