Spresiano
Discovering Spresiano, the Venetian municipality
Spresiano is an Italian municipality in the province of Treviso, located in the heart of the Treviso plain. The municipal territory is crossed by the Piave River and is divided into three areas: the municipal center, Lovadina, and Visnadello. In total, the municipality has around 12,260 inhabitants.
The physical geography of Spresiano
The municipal area of Spresiano is located in the center of the Treviso plain and is crossed by the Piave River in the northeastern zone, where the municipal center and the fraction of Lovadina are located. The fraction of Visnadello, on the other hand, is situated further south and is crossed by the ancient canal of Piavesella di Nervesa. Visnadello borders the municipality of Villorba and joins the industrial periphery of the capital of the Treviso region through the 13 Pontebbana state road.
The origin of the names Spresiano and Visnadello
The name of Spresiano has a Latin root and can derive from "vicus precilianus", meaning the "Precilio farm". There are also archaeological finds that testify to the Roman presence in this area. Instead, Visnadello is a medieval name that reflects the practice of "vicinia", i.e. the gathering of village heads of households.
The history of Spresiano
Spresiano is a coastal village that has experienced several floods over the centuries. Only thanks to the powerful embankments made during the communal era and the Republic of Venice, the economic situation and living conditions in this area have improved. Economic activities over the centuries have been minimal, such as the logging of wood from Cadore and Montello to the sea and the craft of wicker and barrel-making.
The Middle Ages
Spresiano was a strategic location and an obligatory passage for the ford on the river and the resulting connection between Trevigiano, Coneglianese, Friuli, and Transalpine. Over the centuries, this territory has undergone various raids and invasions. In 569, for example, there was a meeting between the Lombard leader Alboino and the bishop of Treviso, Felice, who managed to calm him down and avoid the looting of the Diocesan Church's properties near the Lovadina pass.
Conclusions
Spresiano is a Venetian municipality that, despite the low economic activities and floods that have affected the territory over the centuries, has a very interesting historical and archaeological heritage. Visiting it is possible even just to discover the municipal center, Lovadina and Visnadello and enjoy the beauty of the Treviso plain.
