The history of Spotórno: a place rich in charm and tradition

The name Spotórno derives from the Latin word "spelta" with the suffix "-urnum", which forms the names of plant associations. The meaning of the name is "place where Triticum spelta is cultivated". The village was under the dominion of the Del Carretto marquises from the 12th century, then passing under the control of the Diocese of Savona-Noli in 1180. Later, a coalition of soldiers from Noli, Segno and Genoa attacked the episcopal village of Spotórno and its castle, but despite this, Spotórno remained firmly in the hands of the Savona bishop. In 1385, Pope Urban VI sold the fiefdom of Spotórno and Pietra Ligure to the Republic of Genoa. Spotórno became part of the podesteria of Capo di Vado with the main centers of Vado, Bergeggi and Noli. In 1582, Spotórno had its own statute and the economy was mainly based on fishing, shipbuilding and lime production.

Modern times: Spotórno in the Ligurian Republic

With the fall of the Republic of Genoa in 1797 and Napoleon Bonaparte's Italian Campaign, Spotórno returned to the Department of Letimbro with the capital Savona, within the Ligurian Republic. This marked the beginning of a period of changes for our village and our region. Come and discover our past and present.

In conclusion, Spotórno is a unique place that combines the beauty of the sea with unspoiled nature and its millenary history. We invite you to visit our town and discover its beauty and charm. Thank you for reading!
