Spiazzo

Spiazzo: a village surrounded by nature

Spiazzo is a delightful municipality in the province of Trento, located in the green and enchanting Val Rendena, crossed by the Sarca river. Looking north from the center of the town, you can admire the majestic mountain range of the Adamello and Presanella Alps, which extend to the west, and that of the Brenta Dolomites to the east, which falls within the Adamello-Brenta provincial natural park.

The territory of Spiazzo is also made up of three hamlets, one of which, Borzago, with the "Cort da Togno", a magnificent inner courtyard decorated with beautiful mural paintings by Vigilio Pellizzari Togno, a testimony to the Austrian occupation during the First World War. Other hamlets are Fisto and Mortaso, each with its own historical and landscape characteristics.

History of Spiazzo

The history of Spiazzo begins with the first Bronze Age settlements, followed by populations of Celtic and Rhaetian origin. After Roman domination, the valley became part of the Episcopal principality of Trento and was the scene of war between the Venetian and Lombard lordships. In the Middle Ages, the valley was a protagonist in the development of trade relations with nearby areas.

The town of Spiazzo developed around the sanctuary consecrated to Vigilio of Trento, who according to tradition would have suffered martyrdom here in 405. The church was built on a temple dating back perhaps to the Late Antiquity, certainly before the year 1000. One of the finds found under the current pavement of the sanctuary, a stele dedicated to the cult of Saturn, was demolished by the Trento bishop, triggering a reprisal.

In 1928, the mountain communities of Borzago, Fisto and Mortaso were reunited in a single municipal entity bearing the current name of Spiazzo.
