History
Origins
Traces of human activity date back to the Upper Paleolithic period, and mythical tradition has it that the city of Amyclae, founded by the Spartans, arose precisely near Sperlonga.
The Roman period
In the Roman era, numerous villas were built in the Sperlonga territory, including that of Emperor Tiberius with the famous natural cave modified and decorated with sculptures from the cycle of Ulysses. The villas also serve as production centers for the fishing industry.
The Middle Ages
In the 6th century, the ruins of the imperial villa were used as a refuge, but Sperlonga developed on the nearby promontory of San Magno to defend itself from Saracen raids by sea. The name of the village derives from the large cave ("spelunca") incorporated in Tiberius's villa. In the 10th century, the castle of Sperlonga was mentioned in a document and the town developed around it in concentric circles. In the 11th century, the settlement was surrounded by walls, of which two gates remain today.
Pirate attacks
Despite the construction of a series of observation towers for coastal defense, Sperlonga suffered numerous pirate attacks. In 1534, Ottoman admiral Ariadeno Barbarossa looted the town. In 1623, a fleet of Barbary corsairs made another raid, which is remembered in the poem "The sack and ruin of Sperlonga in 1623".
Modern development
Sperlonga was rebuilt in the period from the 17th century to the 19th century and took on the current form called "a tortoise". The modern development of the town has led to the construction of churches and noble palaces, giving the historic center a charming appearance.
Conclusions
Sperlonga is a charming village that has been able to maintain its natural and historical charm. The richness of the coves, the suggestive historic center, and the beauty of the surrounding nature make it an ideal destination for a day trip.
