Castel Ivano: a municipality born from the merger of four municipalities
Hello friends, I want to talk to you about the municipality of Castel Ivano, a recently established Italian municipality in the autonomous province of Trento in Trentino-Alto Adige. Its creation was the result of the merger of the Italian municipalities of Strigno, Spera, Villa Agnedo, and Ivano Fracena, from which it takes its name. The municipality is spread out and has its town hall in the hamlet of Strigno and has about 3279 inhabitants.
Physical geography: a territory characterized by mountains and rivers
Castel Ivano is located on the southern slope of the Lagorai mountain range and along the western slopes of Mount Lefre. The municipality is located in the eastern part of the Valsugana and is characterized by the point of bifurcation between the main path of the valley and the routes to the Tesino Plateau. The peaks of the south-eastern Lagorai range descend to the Brenta River and then rise along the steep northern slopes of the Venetian Prealps. The territory is crossed by the Brenta River and the Chieppena stream, which flows through the territory separating the hamlets of Tomaselli, Strigno, Spera, and Villa (on its right) from Ivano-Fracena and Agnedo (on its left).
History: the territory that was once part of Castel Ivano
The municipality of Castel Ivano was founded in what in medieval times was the jurisdiction of Castel Ivano (castle) and included several villages including Strigno, Spera, Villa Agnedo, Ivano Fracena, Samone, Bieno, Scurelle and Ospedaletto. The castle maintained its centrality in the territory until the mid-nineteenth century, when the urban development of Strigno surpassed it in importance. During the period of Italian fascism, the various municipalities in the area were aggregated into Strigno, but in 1947, all regained their autonomy.
The possibility of a possible merger gained strength in 2014 with the birth of a committee whose aim was to involve all 8 municipalities that were once part of the castle's jurisdiction. Following a petition drive and with the opinion of various administrations, a referendum was held on June 7, 2015, with a positive result in all the former municipalities. With L.R. 11/2015 the Trentino-Alto Adige Region established the new body, effective from January 1, 2016.
In summary, Castel Ivano is a municipality born from the merger of four municipalities in 2016. Its geographical location and historical past make it an interesting place to visit and discover. If you are thinking of taking a trip to Trentino-Alto Adige, I recommend visiting this municipality.
