Specchia

Welcome to Specchia: the jewel of Southern Italy's Salento region

Specchia, formerly known as "Specchia De' Preti" until 1873, is a picturesque municipality in the province of Lecce, Puglia, located 53 km from the main city. In 2013, it was awarded the prestigious title of "Jewel of Italy" and is also a member of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" club. The 24.74 km² municipality is part of the Union of the Municipalities of Terra di Leuca and is characterized by its terraced olive groves and rural "pajare" buildings.

Physical geography

Specchia is located in the hinterland of the Salento region, halfway between the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea. The town sits on a small hill at 131 meters above sea level, at the foot of the Salentine Hills. The municipality borders Miggiano to the north, Tricase to the east, Alessano and Presicce-Acquarica to the south, and Ruffano to the west.

Territory

The territory of Specchia ranges from 97 to 189 meters above sea level and is famous for its "pajare", rural stone buildings shaped like igloos, typical of Salento. The municipality also includes the locality of Cardigliano, built in the fascist era in 1930 for tobacco processing.

Climate

Specchia has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot-humid summers. The average temperature in January, the coldest month, is around 15.6°C, while that of August, the hottest month, is around 30°C. Annual rainfall is around 288mm.

History

The settlement of Specchia dates back to the Norman period and the beginning of the feudal era. In the Middle Ages, the prominent position on the hill and the distance from the sea protected the town from Saracen attacks, thus favoring population growth. Like most towns in Salento, Specchia was a feudal property of many aristocratic families, from Orsini Del Balzo to Ligorio. Feudalism was abolished in 1806.

Key dates

The first small settlement of peasants and shepherds who settled in a high enough place and far from the sea to be protected from frequent Saracen raids probably dates back to the 9th century.

Conclusion

Specchia is an ancient and fascinating city, immersed in the countryside of the Salento region. It is famous for its "pajare", olive groves, and the beauty of its landscapes. If you want to experience an authentic Southern Italy experience, don't miss the opportunity to visit this jewel of Italy.
