Torri
Welcome to Torri: a brief introduction
Hello everyone, today I will talk to you about a small village in the municipality of Sovicille, located in Tuscany and called Torri. Torri is about 15 km south of Siena, in the beautiful Val di Merse. In this article, I will take you on a journey to discover this ancient town, rich in history and places of interest that you cannot miss!
Monuments and places of interest
Torri is a medieval village that developed within an oval city wall, which is still preserved and over 20 meters high. The center of the village is the Church of Santa Mustiola, built by the ancient Ardengheschi county on the order of the bishop of Siena. The church has been renovated in Gothic style, but has kept many of its original features.
Near the church, there was a feudal monastery called Monte Falcone, which however no longer existed in the 13th century. Nevertheless, the monastery continued to be an important religious center until it was sold to private individuals at the end of the 19th century. Of what remains of the monastery, the most precious part is the beautiful cloister, an example of Romanesque architecture in two-tone marble, enriched with capitals, pulvini, and polychrome encrustations. The upper orders of the cloister, in bricks, travertine and wood, were added in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Torri is completely paved in serena stone and preserves several medieval architectures, including a castle gate.
