Physical Geography

The Territory

Soverìa Mannelli is located in a basin, crossed by the Amato river, and is surrounded by the depression of the southern foothills of the Sila and the Reventino mountains. The city is divided into two parts: the upper part, known as "San Tommaso" or "Mannelli," and the lower part, which extends along the ancient State Road 19 of Calabria. Some more distant localities from the urban center are Colla, Pirillo and Santa Margherita.

Soverìa is considered a mountainous territory, and the prevalent altitude is about 800 meters above sea level. The woods cover over 30% of the territory. The most important mountains are Rosello, San Tommaso and Eremita.

Watercourses

In the territory of Soverìa, the watercourses mainly identified are those of the Creek. In particular, in the locality of "Porta Piana," the Amato river originates, which originates from the confluence of the Sabettella and Occhiorosso streams. Other minor streams are the left tributaries of the Amato, such as the Scaglione, Menicone, Galice, and Ruina creeks. The Quaresima and Guglielmino streams are the right tributaries of the Corace.

Climate

Thanks to its altitude and geographical location, Soverìa Mannelli has an Apennine climate, with cold winters and cool summers. This leads to a long rainy season from autumn to spring.

From 1984 to 2017, according to the data recorded by the local weather station, the rainiest month is December with 11.8 days, while the least rainy month is July with only 2.4 days. Origins of the Name

The origin of the name "Soveria Mannelli" is still a matter of debate. For some, the toponym "Soveria" refers to the presence of a species of sorbus ("suarvu" in the local language), while "Mannelli" is related to the production of linen fabrics, made with wooden artisanal tools called "manni" in the local language.
